Shimla was once part of Nepal and was a small place until the British came upon it in 1819. The first British home was built 3 years later and in 1864 it officially became the summer capital of British India. AT an altitude of about 2200metres it has a cool summer climate and is still a popular hill station to escape from the heat of the plains during the summer. Shimla is now the state capital of Himachel Pradesh and has a growing population of about 150,000 people. The central area of the town though retains many of the old colonial buildings giving a mixed feel to the town's character.
The town sits along central ridge with seven peaks around it. The two main areas in the centre are called The Ridge and The Mall. The Ridge, overlooks the town and the hills beyond it is an open area used as a promenade. The Mall is not a modern shopping mall, more like a High Street with a mix of shops and important civic building. These areas are easy to walk around as only offical cars are allowed in.
To move
easily from the main Cart road to the Mall, there is a lift, the tower in the
centre of this picture is the first stage of the lift journey, we then made our
way along the covered walkway to reach the second lift and get the the Mall

roofed building to the left of the picture was behind the lift system.
