Shimla is famous as the place of where the British retreated from the heat of Delhi and used as their summer capital. At an altitude of 2200 metres it is situated in the lower regions of the Himalayan Range. The area is called the Shimla Hills. Naldehra is a small village about 20 km north of Shimla and it was here that we stayed for the weekend. Shimla is about 360km North from Delhi, however the windy hill roads, meant that coming from Gurgaon 20km South of Delhi, the whole 400km took about 13 hours to cover. You need patience and a good bottom to travel around India!!
There was a noticeable difference between this region and Darjeeling, which though at a similar altitude is much further south. Darjeeling was much greener and more lush in its vegetation. The Shimla hills seem much drier and have a lot of fir and pine trees and some areas seem quite harsh.
