Home Indian Trips <<Previous Shimla Next>>
As mentioned in the introduction this was a long journey taking us about 13 hours in all to cover the 400km, of course there were a few stops along the way. We decided to leave at 7am and stop for breakfast in Delhi and that way miss the worst of the rush hour. We then headed North out of Delhi along National Highway 1 (NH1) This was a fairly reasonable road and dual carriage most of the way, but you still have to take the ring road around the east of the city and the road is fairly busy.

This section is flat, very flat, and is a sequence of one small town after another, so when you go through those there will be hold ups with junctions etc. So it is rarely possible to travel much faster than 60 mph, its not quite like going along the A1. After about 220km you begin to see the hills.

The hills rise from the plains.

Its not long before the winding route starts and progress slows negotiating the bends and lorries on the road.

A look down a valley
The
road continues upwards on the slope opposite.
In
many areas parts of the hills had been terraced for cultivation.
Deep
cuttings have been made along some parts of the route.
A
brief coffee break along the road and we spotted these baskets, not sure of
their use though.
