Pan, is an Indian chewing item consisting of various seeds, sugar pills and sometimes tobacco or beetel nut other addictive substance that causes a a high, but has similar risks to tobacco.  The copper bowl to the right holds fresh leaves from the beetel tree, which is what the various pan ingredients are wrapped up in.
