Pangong Lake

The lake lies at an altitude of about 4400 m and it is the largest lake within the Himalayan ranges.  It is 130 km long  but only about one third of its area lies within India.  The road approaches it from the southern side and you are only permitted to go about 7km along its edge at most, before reaching a restricted area past Spangmik.  We took what appeared to be the main tourist track to the edge of the lake rather than go as far as Spangmik.

It is a beautiful place, very sparse, I only spotted a small amount of plant life and the odd bird flying around.  The lake water is salty and there appeared to be little living in it.  It was very clear though.  The lake is surrounded by various peaks and glaciers.  Unfortunately due to the long drive we only had a relatively short time, I could have spent a lot longer just sitting there and taking in the scenery, a remarkable place.

Just us and four other cars of tourists to the whole of the area.  It is one of the must visit places, but still not very many people make it.
