Nubra and Shayok Valleys

These valleys are North of Leh and tend to be lumped together as the Nubra Valley region, though both rivers are in the area and join together.  This route is part of the feeder route from India onto the Silk Route in Central Asia further North so has been an important route for many centuries.  Its a long enough journey by car so in the days of horses it must have been very hard work indeed.  To reach the valley we traveled over Khardung La at over 5000m and some harsher terrain than we saw on our way to Pangong Lake.  We stayed one night at the village of Hunder and saw the monastery at Diskit while there.

You start to gain height quite soon after leaving Leh

This was to the west of us for a short while.

Like the trip to Chang La the road gained altitude by zig-zagging up the mountain side.

This shows some of the difficulties making roads at this level having to blast a way through a side ridge.

The chunk of rock to the left of the road shown above, had the name 'India Gate' , it is not far here to the border with Pakistan.  India Gate is also the name of a war memorial for servicemen in Delhi.
