Home Indian Trips <<Previous Ladakh Next>>
Leh is the district capital of Ladakh and has a population of about 25,000 so is not a big place. When we where there is was just the start of the tourist season and the town was well geared up for them, more so than some other areas we have traveled in. Many of the visitors to the area come for trekking so may be in Leh for only a day or two while they acclimatise to the altitude. We stayed for the week at a hotel right in the centre though we also had two nights away at camps. The hotel had been recently renovated but had obviously not quite finished all the work as during the week we were there new items kept arriving.

One day the bed side tables and wall light fittings arrived, the next day the bulbs even came! Also there was new china for the restaurant and towels in the room. Light fittings got fitted outside and hopefully they were going to finish off the stairs at some point.

Dominating over the town is Leh Palace built in the seventeenth century, it is nine stories high, but now largely abandoned after an invasion from Kashmir in the 19th century. The Royal Family then transferred to Stok Palace. It does though have a museum, though we did not get the time to visit.
