Chinese Fishing Nets

Around the coast of Kochi are a number of Chinese fishing nets, so known as the only other place in the world that these types of nets are found is in China.  The first were erected some time between 1350 to 1450 indicating early trade links with China.

The net is lowered by releasing the tie ropes at the back and one of the fishermen walking out along one of the cantilever poles  over the net.

While on the tour the guide took us to one of the sites and the fisherman encouraged Andy to help them.

At this point they are pulling up the nets to check the catch, there are also large stones used as counterweights, so I had to be careful where I stood to take the photograph and not get knocked out.

The fisherman is checking the net for the catch.  Apparently these days few fish come this far up harbour getting caught by larger scale methods off shore.   So tourists like us are a big source of income, tipping them for a play on the nets.

Andy did catch some jelly fish though.

Near the nets there was a fish market, selling the local catches, lots of very large prawns and a range of sea fish and the odd shark.  You could buy some and then have it cooked straight away at a neighbouring stall.
