The Jal Mahal or Water Palace is set in the Man Sagar Lake about 2km from Jaipur, the hotel we stayed in was opposite this spot. It was built in 1799 by Sawai Pratap Singh as a summer resort and pleasure spot. The lake was created earlier to provide a reservoir for the residents of Jaipur. Now the lake will often be nearly empty by the end of the summer re-filling during the monsoon. When we visited the rains had filled up the lake again.

In the 1980's the palace was flooded so it is no longer used at all, though while we where there we did see a small rowing boat take a few people across on a couple of occasions.
In
the distance is the dam that forms the lake, while in the foreground is one of
two additional structures, that flanked the palace, though we are not sure of
their purpose.

This is the road that runs along the lake, out of Jaipur, the yellow building to the left was our hotel.
