Amber was the region's capital for more than six hundred years before Jaipur was built. Most of the current fort was constructed during the 16th and 17th Centuries over the remains of an earlier 11th Centaury fort. It is situated on the top of a hill about 5 km from Jaipur.

Elephants
carry tourists up to the fort, but have a rest and a wash in the lake below the
fort.
We took an elephant ride up to the fort, the first step was to get on board from a raised platform.

The route up is quite steep and provides ample of hawkers the opportunity to sell items to tourists.

Also there are cameramen to take your photo as you ride up, and we quite liked ours so brought a copy.

Our elephant was a 30 year old female, but I have forgotten its name. The journey was very steady and smooth, just a gently rocking side to side.
