Nirona Village - Lacquer Work

Within the village we also saw some wood work being made and decorated with lacquer.

The men used simple bow lathes to shape the pieces and then applied colour in the form of a lacquer.  Here he is smoothing and polishing the colour with a cloth.

While some colour is left in bands on other pieces a marble effect is created.

Here the end of a spatula was being shaped after the colour work had been completed.  It is finished at this point because the end must be kept thick to be held on the lathe.  A mistake at this point would waste the whole piece.

Of course a bit of shopping had to be done.

The people here were very keen to pose for photographs.

Quilt making is very common in the region as well.  This lady had made this quilt and was persuaded to show it to us.  They are made for personal use for the cold nights and will also be made by women for their daughter's dowries.
