The Jami Masjid Mosque

Our walk around Ahmedabad finished at the Jami Masjid Mosque constructed by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1424.   The mosque has 15 domes supported by 260 columns and was constructed reusing stone from demolished Hindu and Jain Temples.  Originally there were two shaking minarets, tall towers that if one was shaken the other would move with it.  They lost half their height during an earthquake in 1819 and more was lost in another quake in 1957.  The 2001 earthquake caused damage to some of the jalis (carved lattice screens).  Despite these problems the mosque is an impressive structure and includes a large open courtyard and washing pool.

The picture is taken within the courtyard of the mosque and shows the front of the covered section.

The columns flanking the central arch way are all that remain of the bases of the shaking minaret.
