Modhera Sun Temple

Modhera is a small town just over 100 km northwest of Ahmdabad.  There we saw the sun temple, built by King Bhimdev 1 from 1026. It was designed so that the dawn sun during the equinoxes,  shone through the temple entrance on to an image of Surya the sun god.

A view of the sun temple, The first building is an entrance hall and beyond that is the main building for services and gatherings.

In front of the temple was the Kund (a water tank), which is now dry due to the lowering of ground water levels.

Around the Kund are many small shrines such as the one in the foreground of the picture.

The multiple steps would allow many people to have walked down to the water.

The two topless pillars in front of the entrance hall are what remain of the Torana, an arched gateway leading into the temple.

The whole of the temple, both inside and out, was intricately carved with images of deities and decorative features.
