Sabarmati Ashram

Gujarat was the birth place of the Mahatma Gandhi and when he returned to India from working in South Africa in 1915, he settled in Ahmedabad.  His first ashram was a short distance away but he moved to this site in 1917.  It is now persevered as a museum to the Mahatma and his fight for the Independence of India.   The name comes from the Sabarmati  River which runs through Ahmedabad, and the ashram is positioned along its banks about 5 km from the centre of the city.

Ghandi lived and worked here for 13 years influencing the political and social structures of the country.  Though he spent 3 of those year in trial for rebellious activities.  He left the ashram 12th Match 1930, as the starting point for the Salt March.  A 240 mile walk to the coast to make salt and protest at the salt tax imposed by the British Government.

Gandhi's house in the ashram, being visited by large numbers of school children.  It contains his spinning wheel and other artifacts within the few basic rooms.
