Panaji, formally known as Panjim, is the capital of Goa. When the Portuguese arrived in 1510 they took over the town and used it as a port, particularly as a military landing and warehousing town. Then in 1759 a number of epidemics in Old Goa forced the Viceroy to move his residence to Panaji, but it did not become the official capital until 1843. We only spent a short time there, but it had a pleasant feel to it.
