Old Goa

Old Goa has been an important centre in the region since the 11th century due to its strategic location on the Mandovi River.  As such of the centuries there have been a number of forts, temples and mosques.  What can be seen today owes most of its heritage to the presence of the Portuguese, who used it as their capital until the middle of the 18th century. The town is now a World Heritage Site.

There is a large open space with the Church of St Francis of Assisi and Se Cathedral one side of the road and the Basilica de Bom Jesus on the other.  Details about the Basilica are on the next page.

The Cathedral is thought to be Asia's largest Church.  An inscription near the entrance states that King Dom Sebastiao ordered the construction of the Cathedral in 1562.

The main altar of the Cathedral is dedicated to St Catherine, it is made from gilded wood.
