Around Old Goa

The main centre of Old Goa with the Basilica and Cathedral is a wide open space that is unusual in India, as you leave you see more typical sights.

The town is situated on the River Mandovi and during the 17th century it is reported that around 1000 ships a year would dock.  Near the quay area is the Viceroy's Arch which was built by Francisco de Gama who was Viceroy from 1597-1600.

 

 

 

This small church is dedicated to St Catherine was on the outskirts of the town.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Just outside of the town there was another church called Our Lady of the Mount, it was closed but the main reason for going there was for the view that it provides.

The Tower of the Church of St Augustine is to the left, the red roof in the centre is the Basilica while the Cathedral is to the right.
