The Five Rathas and Shore Temple

Two other major parts of the area are the Five Rathas and a Shore Temple.  The Five Rathas were buried by sand up until 200 years ago and are now only 300m from the sea.  Each of the five temples are carved out of single pieces of rock rather than having been built from pieces of stone.  We did not actually go into the compound, but rather took a brief look from the side.

The Shore Temple on the beach.  The temple has been protected from sea erosion by a rock barrier in front of it.  Over the last ten years more ruins and artefacts have been revealed as the water has receded.  The Tsunami of 2004 revealed some more, the temple was saved by its barrier.
